Ethnolinguistic Groups of the Philippines (With Population Estimates)

Image
I’m a 1.5 generation Filipino immigrant — I left the Philippines at 9 years old and grew up in the United States. Like many others who moved young, I still find myself learning more about the history and cultural richness of our homeland. One of the most fascinating and often overlooked aspects of the Philippines is just how diverse it truly is. The Philippines is home to over 175 ethnolinguistic groups , each with its own language, culture, and history. Below is a more detailed look at the major groups, including where they live and approximate population sizes. Luzon Tagalog (~28–30 million) – Central & Southern Luzon, Metro Manila, Mindoro Ilocano (~9–10 million) – Northern Luzon, Ilocos, Cordillera, migrants in Mindanao Kapampangan (~2.9 million) – Pampanga, Tarlac, parts of Bulacan, Bataan Pangasinan (~1.5–1.8 million) – Pangasinan Province Bicolano (Central Bikol) (~4–5 million) – Bicol Region Ibanag (~500,000) – Cagayan Valley Ivatan (~30,0...

Voltes V (1977) Opening & Closing Themes - Remastered 4K Ultra HD Upscale

Image
I love Voltes V! ChĹŤdenji MashÄ«n Borutesu Faibu), popularly known as simply Voltes V (pronounced as "Voltez Five") is a Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Company and animated by Nippon Sunrise (now known as Bandai Namco Filmworks and formerly known as Soeisha). It aired on TV Asahi and its affiliates from June 4 1977 to March 25 1978. Voltes V grew into a cultural phenomenon in the Philippines since its airing in the country in 1978. My sister, my Lola and I had joined my parents in Chicago in August 1976.  My Lola had returned to the Philippines in November 1977; unfortunately she passed away so young days before her 64th birthday in July 23, 1978. It was the first time for all of us to vacation in the Philippines in 1978. Balikbayan! Voltes V had just started airing in the Philippines then, and watching the show was/is one of my favorites memories from August 1978. My childhood friends and I would play taguan or patintero in the street in the front of o...

Following the election victory of United States President-elect Donald Trump, the Philippines' ambassador to the country Jose Manuel Romualdez advised the 250,000 to 300,000 illegal Filipino immigrants in the US to leave voluntarily to avoid being blacklisted. Fighting For Recognition #HappyVeteransDay #FilipinoVeterans

Image
Cenon Audencial was a guerilla with the Philippine Resistance Movement turned second lieutenant in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Far East in the early 1940s. Like many of the 260,000 Filipinos who fought and served under and alongside the U.S. military during World War II, Audencial may never be recognized for his war efforts because of lost documentation. Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces (who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). In 1946 after World War II concluded, President Harry S. Truman signed the Rescission Act, which provided Filipino soldiers would be stripped of their statuses as U.S veterans, effectively denying them their rightful benefits. It was one of the greatest injustices in U.S history. In 1946 after World War II concluded, President Harry S. Truman signed the Rescission Act, which pr...

Duterte Tells Philippine Soldiers To Shoot Female Rebels In Their Vaginas

Image
On Feb. 7, Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte told soldiers to shoot female rebels in their genitals, the latest in a series of violent, misogynistic remarks. "If there is no vagina, it would be useless," he continued, appearing to imply that women are useless without their genitals," according to local media reports. (Feb. 12, 2018)

The Philippine–American War or Filipino–American War

Image
The Philippine-American War started on February 4, 1899 and lasted until July 2, 1902 A s part of my daily morning routine, I check out Google News for the latest.  I then searched " Filipino-American ."  The first item that came up was  The Jim Crow Army in the Philippine-American War . Some African American soldiers of the conflict thought fighting against fellow people of color was unjust. I'm a stickler for dates and anniversaries.  I just wanted to note that the Philippine-American War started 121 years ago, ten years before my paternal grandfather would be born. I had read up on my Philippines history before I migrated to the USA as a 9-year old.  My first library was the bookcase at my grandmother's house (down the street from my parents') full of my uncles' & aunts' school textbooks.  I even "borrowed" two of them to bring with me to Chicago. I hope my kids, from time to time, watch documentaries on YouTube to learn about th...
